    About Tony

Tony Stewart is a racer’s racer. If a greyhound, a fighter pilot and a chainsaw sculptor were somehow genetically welded together, reengineered with gasoline and cloned to form a half-carburetor, half-human racing man/machine, Tony would be that man/machine. Tony Stewart was born to race. In other words, if when Tony Stewart was born the doctor told him racing hadn’t been invented yet, he would crawl to the library, teach himself how to read and begin studying how to cryogenically freeze himself long enough for racing to be invented. In 2005, during a race, Tony Stewart got tired and, while taking a nap in the backseat, passed eight cars to clinch the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship.

If Tony Stewart were in a presidential race, his campaign bus would be a 50-passenger Camaro and people would vote for him because he would promise to do donuts on the White House lawn. The point is: Tony Stewart is a racer.

In fact, Tony Stewart once raced in the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 in the same day and then drove home to Indiana so he could watch the race highlights of himself racing, only to fall asleep and dream about losing a 40-yard dash to a puma only to wake up, rent a puma and race it in real life.

What can we say? The guy likes to race.

TONY STEWART – Great Expectations

Who knew? It is a question that resounds vividly in the hearts and minds of Tony Stewart and his Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) teammates precisely one year after they first made the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series scene on the hallowed grounds of Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway.

As the two-time Sprint Cup champion gets set to start his second full season as a driver/owner, who knew that in its first year Stewart’s two-car racing operation, built on the foundation of Haas CNC Racing, could win five races and sit on the pole twice before all was said and done? And it would add another 14 top-three, 20 top-five and 38 top-10 finishes, lead 628 race laps and, to top it all off in grand style, qualify both of its teams in the Chase for the Championship?

Q & A with Tony Stewart

You’ve said that you were a little nervous before the start of last season, not knowing exactly what to expect. What is your level of anticipation heading into this season, and is it any different than last year?

“I can promise you one thing: a year ago at this time, none of us knew what to expect and it was a big question mark. Obviously, getting the first year under our belt, there’s a lot more relaxation from my standpoint as far as my nerves are concerned. But I’m so extremely proud of the group we have here, the relationship that (crew chief) Darian (Grubb) and I have built over the last year, the relationship with (co-driver) Ryan (Newman) and (Newman’s crew chief) Tony Gibson and (competition director) Bobby Hutchens. I mean, this group is a really tight knit group to me and I’m very, very proud of what these guys have done over the last year. And, honestly, I’m expecting a great year. I feel like, with both of us being able to get in the Chase last year, that’s something that I expect both teams to do this year, and I feel like the changes we went through and the work that we did over the winter have prepared both of these teams to have a shot at running for a championship. So, versus last year at this time, saying that we just wanted to make the Chase and hopefully win some races, I feel like this year we have two teams that are legitimate contenders to not only make the Chase, but also have a shot at the championship.”

Stewart’s Chances of Winning Go South in South Florida

Tony Stewart’s chances of ending the 2009 season with a victory appeared quite good as he led twice for 43 laps early in Sunday’s season-ending Ford 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

However, the driver of the No. 14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevrolet Impala SS for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) saw his opportunity for victory go south at the South Florida track when he became involved in two separate incidents with Juan Pablo Montoya. The result of those incidents was some crinkled sheet metal and a disappointing 22nd-place finish.

Stewart Happy to See Phoenix in Rearview Mirror

Tony Stewart’s drive in Sunday’s Checker O’Reilly Auto Parts 500k NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Phoenix International Raceway went from a possible top-10 performance to a disappointing 25th-place result when he was caught up in a multi-car accident on lap 171 of the 312-lap race.

It was triggered when Dale Earnhardt Jr., spun coming off turn four of the 1-mile oval, and Stewart’s No. 14 Old Spice/Office Depot Chevrolet Impala SS was among a gaggle of cars that were trapped in the ensuing melee. Nine cars in all were involved, with Stewart suffering significant damage to each corner of his racecar, including a busted front splitter that took three pit stops to repair.

Stewart Solid at Texas, Finishes Sixth

The good news for Tony Stewart during Sunday’s Dickies 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth was that he spent the majority of the 334-lap race comfortably in the top-10. The bad news for the driver of the No. 14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevrolet Impala SS for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) was that he had difficulty cracking the top-three en route to a sixth-place finish, which is his 23rd top-10 finish of 2009.

“We missed it a little bit today and it was one of those changes that we couldn’t do on a regular pit stop, so we just kind of had to work around it,” Stewart said. “I’m really proud of Darian (Grubb, crew chief) and these guys. They had good pit stops today and Darian and I kept talking about what we thought we could do to make the Office Depot/Old Spice Chevy better. I thought team-wise we had an awesome day working together and making gains at it. We never said, ‘Well, we just can’t get it any better.’ We kept throwing things at it to try to make it better.”

Typical Talladega

Crapshoot. Wild card. Those are the words most often used to describe racing at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, and Sunday’s AMP Energy 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at the vast, 2.66-mile oval proved those descriptions correct.

Tony Stewart, driver of the No. 14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevrolet Impala SS for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR), was one of the many drivers whose shot at a good finish went up in a cloud of smoke when he was caught up in the first of two multi-car accidents.

Stewart Snares Ninth-Place Finish at Martinsville

Tony Stewart hung on for a respectable ninth-place finish in Sunday’s TUMS Fast Relief 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway after a late-race caution thwarted his chance for a top-five result.

The driver of the No. 14 Old Spice/Office Depot Chevrolet Impala SS for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) earned his 22nd top-10 of the season and his 13th top-10 in 22 career Sprint Cup starts at Martinsville.

Stewart Soldiers to 13th-Place Finish at Charlotte

Tony Stewart soldiered to a respectable 13th-place finish in Saturday night’s NASCAR Banking 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway near Charlotte, N.C. The pilot of the No. 14 Old Spice/Office Depot Chevrolet Impala SS for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) struggled with an ill-handling racecar throughout much of 334-lap event, but the tenacious drive allowed Stewart to pick up his 24th top-15 finish of 2009.

“We were loose at the beginning of a run, then we got to where after about 20 laps, we would start getting tight,” said Stewart, who came into the series’ return trip to Charlotte with high hopes after winning the track’s non-point Sprint All-Star Race in May. “It was just one of those nights where we couldn’t really hit the balance of it. Where we got hurt the most was on starts and restarts when we were all packed up there. We couldn’t make up any ground and couldn’t get in the gas hard. We just gave up a lot of time on the front of runs.”

Tony Stewart: Driver, Owner… Magician

Tony Stewart pulled a rabbit out of the hat in Sunday’s Pepsi 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif., rallying his way to a fifth-place finish after a pit road speeding penalty dropped him to 30th with less than 90 laps remaining.

“I’m really proud of Darian Grubb (crew chief) and all the guys on this Office Depot/Old Spice team,” said Stewart after scoring his series-leading 15th top-five finish of the season. “We weren’t quite as good as we wanted to be today. It shows there is no quit in this team at all. We just keep digging. We got our car good at the end of the day.”

Stewart, Grubb Prove Two Can Equal Four

With 29 laps and one final pit stop remaining in the Price Chopper 400 presented by Kraft Foods NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Tony Stewart and his crew chief, Darian Grubb, faced a dilemma. Two tires or four?

When the No. 14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevrolet Impala SS came to pit road under caution on lap 238 of the 267-lap event, Stewart and Grubb agreed they would take two tires rather than four and attempt to win the race off pit road.
